Thermal Doors at Melbourne Market

Products Used: Compact Sectional Door

The Melbourne Market is the central wholesale trading and distribution centre for Victoria’s fresh produce industry. The Melbourne Market Authority is responsible for managing the site and its operations which include the Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market and the National Flower Centre plus an extensive range of associated warehousing and distribution facilities. It is one of six central fresh produce markets in Australia.

The Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market houses over 600 grower/wholesaler stands and 140 wholesaler trading units. The variety, freshness and quantity of produce grown in Victoria is outstanding and includes stone fruit, pome fruit, citrus fruit, leafy vegetables, root vegetables, berries and much more. Significant quantities of produce including tropical fruits and vegetables are also consigned from other parts of the Australia and overseas to provide year round fresh, seasonal supply and variety. Over 1800 individual fruit and vegetable buyers representing independent greengrocers, supermarkets, restaurants and food processors source their produce direct from the Market. Many more receive deliveries and consignments from the Market.

As of the 31st August 2015, the Melbourne Market is making a move to new site in Epping, in short the new market will be a safer, greener and more efficient place for buying and selling fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. It will support industry-led innovation and growth as well as become a hub for the wholesaling of fresh produce in Victoria. With more than 3,000 businesses employing 7,500 staff at the Market, there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes to support this move. Click here to watch the video for a closer look at why the move is happening and what it means for the Market.

In an environment where fresh produce is being stored, such as the Melbourne Market, it is vital that cool room equipment is both reliable and performs well. The entrance / exit to a coolroom are a critical energy loss point, if the cool room temperature is compromised this puts the produce at risk of damage and also increasing electricity costs for the tenant. Therefore large coolrooms require doors which are both high speed (to avoid loss of energy each time that the doors are opened) and that they are well insulated. The Compact Door ticks both of these boxes and more! An added benefit of the Compact Sectional door is it that saves space by not taking up valuable overhead space which regular overhead doors require. Read more about the comparisons of the Compact Sectional Door vs Regular Shutter Door here.

Remax Compact Sectional Doors were specified in the relocated, new Melbourne Market build by the architects and we met face-to-face with the tenants, architects and builders at a trade-show style event held at the new market site during 2014 to discuss the Compact Sectional Door and also our Movidor High Speed Rapid Door and to assess the requirements of the tenants. Nine Compact Sectional Doors have been installed in the Melbourne Markets Coolrooms on site where each stall is rented by individual tenants (fruit and vegetable growers).

The team here at Remax have installed nine Compact Sectional Doors at the site, where they required Compact Sectional Doors for the following reasons:

  • For their unique thermal properties. Door panels have the flexibility to be used in many different environments. One being cool room environments, where the insulated sandwich panels are CFC-free polystyrene foam covered with aluminium stucco finished cladding. Insulation value EN12428, Panel: U=0.76 W/m²K.
  • Traditionally, overhead sectional doors require wall space and ceiling space to allow the door panels to run up and under the ceiling. The tracks are often supported by unsightly bracing and ceiling supports. Additionally, the lifting shaft and springs are all exposed, adding to an unsightly look in an otherwise clean environment. The Compact Sectional Doors chosen by Melbourne Markets have none of that. By contrast, they’re neat, free of any exposed springs, and compact! Their small footprint, and compact design meant that all the existing electrical and lighting infrastructure in the new facility remained undisturbed. The Compact Sectional Door folds together above the entrance while opening, and saves not only space but is also very easy to operate and is maintenance friendly.
  • As an exit / entry point for receivables and dispatch for temperature control; Compact Sectional Doors open at 19cm/sec (or up to 60cm/sec for high speed option) which means that they maintain internal temperature when forklifts and vehicles are coming in and out by being kept closed for longer, reducing energy losses through open doors.

Not only is the Compact Sectional Door favoured by Architects due its versatility in appearance, but it is also favoured by Builders due to its versatility onsite when it comes to ease of installation and because it does not require the vast increase in overhead space which is normally specified for standard overhead doors which can create a large wasted space overhead. This wasted space cannot be utilised for any other purpose. With the Compact Sectional Door, the roof space can be fully utilised without impacting the door both in open and closed state.

Compact Sectional Doors have also been installed at Geoffrey Thompson Fruit Packaging in loading docks at the new Orrvale facility, showing the true flexibility of the Compact Sectional Door. Compact Sectional Doors are made bespoke to its environment and entry, in both panel requirements (whether you require full vision panels, thermal panels or a mixture of both - thermal, PVC, double-glazed acrylate/ polycarbonate/ reinforced safety glass, mesh) as well as the opening size, from your average garage door opening size to a large warehouse requiring access for heavy machinery and vehicles such as aeroplanes, cranes and Fire Engines. Also consider a recent installation at a car show room for Mazda, Warrnambool, VIC.
