Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project - VIC

The biggest rail project in Melbourne since the 1970s, the Melbourne Metro Tunnel is an $11 billion metropolitan rail infrastructure project, that is currently under construction. The five underground stations with two 9-kilometer rail tunnels running between South Kensington station and South Yarra, will create capacity on the network to enable more than half a million additional passengers per week across Melbourne’s train network.
In 2019, Remax were engaged to design, manufacture and install two Movidor High Speed Concertina doors, for noise control on the construction site.

Movidor High Speed Concertina Door

Remax were engaged by IDEC Solutions, to design and fabricate two colossal, noise cancelling high speed doors. Presented with two 12m W x 5m H openings, these were the doors nobody wanted to make. Situated above the construction site in Melbourne CBD, these two doors were installed as a “temporary” door solution for noise control, to be removed upon the completion of the 2-year project.

The purpose of the high speed concertina doors in this project, was to allow traffic and vehicle access to the site, whilst containing the noise and dust created by the works in the building. This enabled construction to continue during the day and night, without disturbing the surrounding metropolitan suburb. With a 500kg noise cancelling, twin-skin acoustic curtain, the Movidor concertina door is fully insulated, and developed for high level noise control.

With the ability to perform up to speeds of 1.5 meters per second, the high speed folding doors allow for prompt access and egress for large vehicles and equipment to the construction sites, without disrupting the flow of traffic, or requiring the doors to be open for extended periods of time.

Custom steelwork, counterweights and internal lateral trusses meant the door curtains maintain their wind rigidity, even at such large dimensions. The simple, uncomplicated design means the high speed door is incredibly low-maintenance, and will perform reliably and tirelessly over high amounts of cycles.
